On Slumping

So in my last entry, I discussed having awful book hangovers, where you feel groggy and down in the immediate days following the end of a great book.

For me, unfortunately, book hangovers have a nasty little habit of turning into the dreaded reading slump. I start a couple books a week but don’t really have the energy or desire to actually follow through and read them.

(Are we starting to wonder less about why I didn’t reach my 15,000 goal the first time I tried it this year?)

Let’s face it: reading slumps happen to the best of us. They probably happen to the worst of us as well, I don’t judge! It sucks to slump. But it’s not the worst thing in the world! In my experience, slumping can be necessary. It gives you the time to clear your head, refocus, and then allows you to jump back in when you’re ready.

So don’t worry too much about slumping. Take the time to get out of your own head and enjoy it! Go outside and just soak up the nature around you, or take a nap or five. Reading slumps end. Sometimes they just need to run their course.

So, if you’re out there, what do you think is the worst part of a reading slump? And how do you get out of them?

  1. Whenever I’m going through a reading slump, I usually try to switch to something that’s as different as possible from what I’m currently reading. I feeling like mixing up genres can often help. If that doesn’t work, it never hurts to take suggestions from friends. Even if the recommended book isn’t exactly my cup of tea, it is always interesting to see which books make other people tick. And when physical books still fail to capture my interest, there are always audiobooks!

  2. I sometimes reread a book I loved to get out of a reading slump.
The worst part is that I really want to read the books but just don’t feel like it.
(And I keep buying new books ;))
